The low down on cyber job titles - do red teamers wear red?
Explore cyber security careers we recruit for
here.
Cyber security job titles are getting louder, not clearer
If you’re new to cyber security, the job market can feel like someone threw paint at a wall:
Red Team. Blue Team. SOC Analyst. Threat Hunter. Incident Responder.
And no… Red Teamers don’t actually wear red.
Let’s decode it properly.
What is a Red Team?
A Red Team simulates attackers.
They:
- Think like hackers (ethically)
- Test systems by attempting real-world breaches
- Identify vulnerabilities before criminals do
Common titles:
- Red Team Operator
- Penetration Tester
- Ethical Hacker (less formal but still used)
Think: “Break it before someone else does.”
What is a Blue Team?
Blue Teams defend.
They:
- Monitor systems for threats
- Respond to incidents
- Build defensive controls and detection systems
Common titles:
- SOC Analyst
- Security Engineer
- Incident Responder
Think: “Stop it when it happens — or before.”
What about Purple Teams?
Purple Teams sit in the middle.
They:
- Combine offensive and defensive learnings
- Improve detection by understanding attack methods
Think: “Make both sides better at the same time.”
Why the job titles feel confusing
Cyber security is evolving faster than job frameworks.
Industry demand for cyber security roles continues to grow rapidly in Australia, with ongoing skills shortages and strong workforce demand highlighted across national data sources such as Jobs & Skills Australia and the Australian Computer Society.
Many companies:
- Rename roles for branding
- Blend responsibilities across teams
- Use “creative” titles that sound more senior than they are
So always look beyond the title and ask: What tools? What outcomes? What exposure?
No, Red Teamers don’t wear red.
But they do wear something far more important:
curiosity, persistence and a slightly suspicious mindset.
